Vaman, also known as Vamana therapy, is one of the five cleansing procedures (Panchakarma) in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine originating from India. It is primarily used for detoxification and purification of the body, particularly to remove excess Kapha dosha (one of the three fundamental energies believed to govern physiological processes in the body) from the upper respiratory tract and stomach.
Procedure:
- Preparation: The patient undergoes preparatory procedures like Snehana (oleation therapy) and Swedana (sudation therapy) to liquefy toxins and move them towards the gastrointestinal tract.
- Induction of Emesis: The patient is given a therapeutic emetic substance, typically a medicated decoction made from herbs like licorice, ginger, cardamom, or neem, in gradually increasing doses. The dose and potency are adjusted based on individual constitution and condition.
- Stimulating Vomiting: Once the emetic substance is ingested, it induces vomiting, leading to the expulsion of excess Kapha dosha, mucus, and toxins from the stomach and upper respiratory tract. The act of vomiting is facilitated by massaging the chest and back in an upward direction.
- Rest and Recovery: After vomiting, the patient rests and undergoes gentle massage and steam therapy to promote relaxation and eliminate any remaining toxins.
Indications:
- Kapha-related disorders such as bronchial asthma, allergies, sinus congestion, cough, cold, and obesity.
- Certain skin disorders associated with excess Kapha dosha.
- Conditions where there is an accumulation of toxins in the body.
Benefits:
- Purification of the upper respiratory tract and gastrointestinal system.

Contraindications:
- Vaman therapy is contraindicated in individuals with weak digestion, ulcers, bleeding disorders, pregnancy, and certain cardiac conditions.
- It should only be administered under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
Post-Treatment Care:
- Following Vaman therapy, the patient is advised to follow a specific diet and lifestyle regimen to support the cleansing process and maintain balance in the body.
